My condolence to the Frère family, 1 min of peace and silence

Sad news, I just learned that mister Paul frère left us yesterday, he was 91 years old.

Thanks to Tim Havermans, A small tribute to Paul Frère

Last saturday, February 23 2008 , the Belgian race pilot and journalist deceased.

Paul Frère was born in Le Havre, France. His father was an official in the Belgian government and as he moved from one post to another, the family lived in Paris, Brussels, Berlin and Vienna.

He started racing motorcycles after World War II, making his debut in the first race held in Belgium after hostilities ceased in 1947. He won his class with a pre-war 500-cc Triumph Speed Twin.

He raced cars for the first time the following year in the Spa 24 Hour race driving a friend's 1938 ex-Le Mans MG PB Special and in 1950 he won his class in the Spa production car races driving an 850cc Dyna Panhard.

In 1951 he won his class again, still driving the Panhard. At the time Frère was working as the service manager for the Belgium Jaguar importer and so when one of their customers who had entered his car into the sports car race at the circuit complained that is wasn't as quick as he had expected, he took the car out for 3 laps and promptly put in the fastest lap of the day.

As a result of his quick laps the year before, when Oldsmobile decided to enter a Rocket 88 in the event in 1952, they signed Frère to drive. He won, but only just, coasting across the line with an empty fuel tank. He had been told by the Belgian Automobile Club that is he could find a car, they would give him an entry in his home Grand Prix.

He went to John Heath at HWM but John didn't have a drive available. Frère had helped him secure a hard to find engine part some years earlier when he was living in Paris, so when Heath found he needed a replacement for Peter Collins at the Grand Prix des Frontières in Belgium he called Paul. Frère won on the last lap and ended up retaining the drive for the Belgian Grand Prix. In a very wet race, Paul finished 5th, a couple of laps down on Alberto Ascari, the winner. Paul also drove in the German and Dutch Grand Prix for HWM that year, but went out with mechanical failure both times.

He drove for HWM again in 1953 finishing 11th in Belgium Grand Prix and failing to finish in Swiss. However he did finished 2nd in the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring in the rain.

He made his debut at Le Mans that year driving a 1500cc Porsche Spyder to 15th place and drove a Crysler in the Mille Miglia. Despite loosing his brakes by half distance, he still managed to win his class by a margin of some 2 1/2 hours.

The following year he was invited to test for Mercedes-Benz with a view to driving for them at Le Mans. Unfortunately the cars were not ready in time and he ended up sharing an Aston Martin with Carroll Shelby.

He had also accepted an invitation to race for Gordini for some Grand Prix. In Belgium he retired with engine failure, and in France he retired when the rear axle broke near the finish having been in fifth place. At the German GP at the Nürburgring. He had qualified considerably quicker than Behra but in the race his front wheel flew off fortunately without serious consequences. After that he refused to drive for them again.

Aston invited him back in 1955 only to have Mercedes call with an invitation to drive the 300SLR. Already committed, Mercedes hired Pierre Levegh, whose race ended in the the worst accident this sport has ever seen, with more than 80 dead. Frère finished 2nd driving with Peter Collins.

He drove a Ferrari to 4th place in the Belgian Grand Prix, but then broke his leg in the Swedish Grand Prix sports car race when he crashed the Ferrari Monza he was driving.

In 1956 he was part of the Jaguar sportscar team. He went to Spa for the Belgian GP as a member of the press, but the day before the race he was offered a drive by Ferrari. He finished 2nd in the Lancia-Ferrari behind team mate, Peter Collins, and was invited by the Scuderia to move to Maranello to be their test driver and to take charge of race car preparation. He declined.

A consistent competitor at Le Mans, in 1956 he drove a factory D-Type Jaguar but crashed on only the second lap. In 1957 he finished 4th driving a privately entered D-Type and was 4th again in 1958, driving a 1.5-litre Porsche with Edgar Barth. 2nd in 1959 in an Aston Martin with Maurice Trintignant was followed in 1960 with victory.

Driving with fellow Belgian, Olivier Gendebien, they drove one of four factory Ferrari 250TRs, leading for more than 22 hours before taking the chequered flag. That year he also won the Formula Libre South African Grand Prix in a Cooper and the sportscar Grand Prix of Spa in a Porsche.

He retired from racing at 43 and devoted himself to writing full-time, becoming one of the world's leading motoring journalists.

Literature

The German hobby magazine from the beginning of the sixties just arrived. They are all VW-Porsche or Enzmann related! Noblesse oblige. This will make perfect literature for the long winter evenings near a romantic fire or under a warm blanket!

The journey started with lots of potential. Slightly raising sun, no signs of rain at the horizon, gently starting the engines and “en route pour
l’aventure”, Bitburg Motorpark here we come. A pity Tim’s car didn’t agreed but she will be ok really soon. With such good weather, one could experience how a southern Californian drag day would have been, a perfect mix of oldvdubs and V8 racers. Apart from the drag racing, the superb ambiance and quality time we have spend exchanging memories and thoughts with all these friends made this journey unforgettable. One last word for Olive, always nice to meet you and CU soon!!

Karmann nearly ready to join the roads again

Cleo just when to customs and local technical control. In a first stage, we’ll put her on classic car licence plates (O), bring her back to as close to original and pass regular control in order she can dressed with normal licence plates.

Just need to revise some parts and details but in meantime when can enjoy driving her out. GOSH we love these vw’s.

DVF new Rides

Together with Tim, we picked up an early rust free Type34 is Denmark. Apart from the fact she has been manufactured in November 1961, she has also only  43.500 km. Her history goes as follows: "The first Swedish owner has enjoyed his KG from dec. '61 till 1970, where a local dealer bought the car, repaired a few spots and did a nice repaint job in her original Sea Blue color as a point of attraction for his shop. In 2002, the second owner past away and the car has been sold to a Danish guy, who owned a country house in Sweden were she served well during his vacations. And now, in September 2007, after 46 years of well maintenance, she joined the DVF club, where she will remain for a long time and wear her imperfections with proud. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP TIM!!

Rally Pittoresque

Incredible, no comment to add. Just a perfect day together with the Messy family. ;-) and some precious metals all around: Porsche, Porsche and Porsche, nono, I am just kidding, I was amazed to see the Ferrari, Aston Martin, Healey's, Triumph’s, Fiat’s, VW’s (Type 1 and 3’s), BMW, Lotus, Morgan, Chevy's, Fords, Volvo, MG’s, Jaguar’s (a type D!!!), Delorean DMC-12 etc... With slightly more than 60  participating cars there were 3 convertible D's, 1 roadster, 2 C’s and 6 911’s. WOEFFF!! Smooth cruise and a so nice organisation. As soon as the next date has been announced, make sure you are free that Saturday.

Oh, before I would forget, special thanks to all the sponsors, especially Carrera Motors!

KRABBELI 2007 HUH

The good part of the weekend was to spend some quality time on the camping area with a bunch of crazy bastards. Sorry for those whom I may have hurt but the meeting, based on the crew, cars and ambience is in one word disappointing. Unbelievable all the fuss they make about non-air-cooled campers and motor bikes, it so fucked up. Ex. A H2O cooled diesel T3 is allowed, a diesel T4 not and needed to camp outside the entire meetings area? An air-cooled motorbike is welcome and a H20 needed to stay outside also????.

First, I would like to thank Marcel for his nice welcoming and the superb organisation of this nice cruising day. We know how much time and dedication it take to organise a cruising day, so also some warm Belgian hugs to his lovely wife for her patience. ;-) In the meantime, I would like to applause the grateful assistance of my Norwegian soul mate Morten. Cayenne S Transsyberia - Rene Metge

porsche-cayenne-1915-1-P

One may remembers with emotion the two victories of the Porsche 959 Group B with the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984 and 1986 piloted by Rene Metge. Since then, the proud of Zuffenhausen had been centred around the competition on circuit.

But with the presence of a 4X4 in the range, in fact the Cayenne best-seller, encouraged Porsche to join again the glorious times. Within the framework of the development its customer competition activity, Porsche thus launch its Cayenne S Transsyberia.

It concerns a Cayenne S with a its serial engine (V-8 4,8l direct injection - 385 ch), piloted suspension PDCC with reinforced tires all-road tyres, a roll cage following the FIA norms and a shortened demultiplicator.

Cayenne S Transsyberia also has blockings on the three differentials, of a reinforced front suspension and a protection of the base. The tight doors and the air intake equipped with a snorkel make it possible to cross fords of 75 cm!

This 4X4 armed to the teeth will be marketed in the first time with only 16 units. The first customers will be able to try out their vehicle at the time of the Transsiberia rally organized the 2 at August 14, 2007. A race which will carry them to Moscow in Ulan-Bator (Mongolia) throughout 6200 km of rocky tracks and hostile roads.

Porsche France will engage his own Cayenne S Transsyberia, with at his wheel some… Rene Metge. A kind of homage for rendered service!

8. Int. Bad Camberger VW-Veteranen-Treffen (22 - 24 june)

It was raining all over in the East of Europe, but not in Bad Camberg!! This was a sign. So, on Friday, we packed our camper and drove direction Bad Camberg (D) where every four year this vintage happing is taking place. Traditionally, worldwide rare and lovely special bodies were on the rendezvous. Suddenly on Sunday, for many of us, the pleasure was over as that during the night, a great number of participants their cars has been robbed from their rare stuff. I still feel bad that our cars are nowhere safe anymore. Anyway, enjoy the pictures.
